standing motorcycle concept by jake loniak

August 20th, 2008

‘deus ex machina’ by jake loniak

the art center college of design in pasadena california is well known for their car designs,

however the new motorcycle design program is becoming just as well known. one of the

projects making news is jake loniak’s standing motorcycle concept named ‘deus ex machina’.

the bike is designed as an exoskeleton, allowing the rider to ‘wear’ the motorcycle. the vehicle

manoeuvres based on the rider’s movements, adjusting 36 pneumatic muscles.  while the

bike is still just a concept, its designer believes it can be built since most of the technology

it uses already exists. if someone is daring enough to ride in it is another question. you can

watch a video of the bike here.

August 20th, 2008

this mountain retreat by fearon architects is located in the remote southern lakes of new zealand.

the home may look like mid-century modern architecture but the architects were inspired by

traditional wood-clad hut designs. the house features an open concept living area and two

bedrooms with baths. the use of concrete floors, stone façade and wood panelling give the

residence the feeling of a cave. the home is entered from the top where the roof doubles as

a patio. the home pays full respect to the pristine nature which surrounds by be as self-sufficient

as possible. the home is only dependant on outside electricity.

they are best known for their exhibition design work as well as projects for office, residential

natural within the artificial’. a steel enclosure was constructed to house a series of living

mosses hung on planters. recycled rubber flooring simulated the soft feeling of the moss,

while the moss planes could be felt by hand.
